The Cape Cod Whalers would like to congratulate Providence College commit Chris Romaine on being named Neutral Zone’s prep player of the year. This season in just 18 games Chris registered 22 points, leading the Milton Academy Mustangs in points per game. Chris also tied for the team lead in points, scoring nine goals and adding 13 assists. From NZ “He was given an “A” grade at the Flood Marr Holiday Tournament and was noted as being the best player in the event. He’s a smooth, effortless skating defenseman with a two-way game and high hockey IQ. Romaine played in every situation this season and was relied upon to play heavy minutes, kill penalties, run the power play and be a leader on and off the ice.”

This prep success came as no surprise to those who watched Chris, as he has been one of the top 04’ d-men in the area. When asked about Chris’ success, Head Coach Dave Franzosa stated “Christopher has evolved into an elite defenseman who highly impacts the game in all situations.  His skating, shot, passing ability, physical strength, and hockey IQ are all off the charts.  I have coached Christopher for years and come to know him very well personally, and he is such a great kid. I think there have been times when I felt that he was overlooked so I could not be happier for him that he has been recognized as the prep player of the year.  I think he has an enormously high ceiling in this sport and I look forward to watching him play for years to come.”

When asked about receiving this award Chris stated “Winning this award is a great honor. It is truly humbling considering all the great players in prep hockey who had great seasons. Hockey is a team game, so any individual success is part of something bigger.  We had a really good team and it’s disappointing that we just missed making the tournament. My goal is to keep growing as a player and a person and I think I was able to do that this year.  I’m really working on being the best 2-way defenseman I can be. I love shutting down the other team on defense and then jumping up into the offense in transition. Contributing to the offense without sacrificing anything on defense is very important to me. I’m happy with the progress I’ve made so far.  I’ve been lucky to play for some really good coaches (Prep and Fall) who have trusted me with a lot of responsibility, including being an assistant captain this year.  Coach Cannata and Coach Franzosa are two of the best.”
